this is a quote that is used within the first few lines of the chapter this instantly stood out to me and it tells me to forget everything else and just go and design.
say these magic words "I am a game designer" this is used repeatedly throughout the chapter saying always call yourself a game designer and nothing less because it says if you pretend to be something for long enough and do things that you think a game designer would do normally then eventually you will be a game designer because you will be able to do things you couldn't before.
if you aint dropping, you aren't learning and if you aint learning you aren't a juggler
this sentence is used to show that in all jobs failure is a good thing, because even though it may really annoy you or make you upset it will still make you better than before because if something is perfect then there is nothing to improve on so your product will be a one hit wonder but if you fail then eventually you will get closer and closer to completing the impossible.
this is a list of skills that is said that can be used for a games designer:
- Animation because most if not all modern games have characters that need to seem alive
- Architecture because a lot of games have big detailed structures that will be similar to real houses in different time periods
- Brain storming because you will need to come up with ideas in huge amounts and in short time periods
- Communication because you will need to talk with a lot of people if you are working in a team
- Creative writing because you will need to design fictional worlds, populations and story lines for the player to interact with
- History because alot of games are set in different time periods so knowing information about that time period will help with even the smallest of details when it comes to making the game
- Mathematics because you will need tyo calculate the risk analysis and fit in the complex scoring systems.
these are just a few of many skills that are listed within this chapter but it goes on to say that listening is the best skill that you can have, this is because there are five main things that a game designer really needs to listen to and these are as follows:
- team
- audience
- game
- client
- yourself
within the final few pages it says that I doesn't matter if you have a gift for what you do or not, this is because although someone may have a gift at doing something that doesn't mean that they will be interested in that specific area which means they may not put their full amount of effort into what they are doing whereas someone who doesn't have the natural gift will try their hardest to learn this skill and because it is an area of interest for them this means that they will be more likely to put more effort in than anyone else.
finally it says
I AM A GAMES DESIGNER!!!!
